What are ceramic coatings?

The phrase ceramic coating gets thrown around more than a Gilbert ball at the six nations, yet I am willing to bet that only a few know the ins and outs of how they actually protect your paintwork.

The main composite in many ceramic coatings (alongside many solvents and other smaller elements) is silicon dioxide, or SiO2. This forms the base ‘hardness’ of the coating which is why you get that super slick feel to a coated car.

Although it is applied in liquid form, once cured the nano-ceramic coat hardens to form a layer of protection over your paintwork. This is a layer that is much harder than even the best car waxes, which is one of the reasons it lasts much longer.

How do ceramic coatings work?

I think the easiest way to convey just how brilliant ceramic coatings are is to compare its relative hardness to other known materials.

On a Mohs scale (An objective measure of relative hardness) ceramic coatings will receive between a 6 and 7 rating. To put that into perspective glass is rated at a 5 and steel being rated at around a 6.5!

Now I think it's easier for you to imagine just how ceramic coatings are able to protect your paintwork from swirl marks and other types of paint damage.

How Long

How long does a ceramic coating last?

Following a more realistic approach, at Courts Detailing we provide a more concise range of coatings than your average detailer.

We currently offer two long term coating solutions which are the 1 and 2 year coating respectively. A quick google search will see coatings boasting 5, up to even 10 years. Why do we not provide such coatings?

A ceramic coating is great in reducing the amount of dirt that will build up on your paintwork, however it isn't a miracle coating, your car will still need washing albeit at longer intervals. Even the perfect wash method will, over the course of a few years, create very fine swirls also known as haze. Taking this realistic approach it's fair to say then most cars will need polishing and re coating usually every 3-5 years.

In our opinion then, a coating that boasts one of these 'super long' durabilities is unnecessary in the long run based on real world conditions.
